New Poll: The New Immigration Bill

by Jason Rosenbaum  ::  Filed Under U.S. Domestic Issues  ::  June 3rd, 2007 @ 1:16 pm EST

This week we ask you what you think about the new immigration bill working its way through Congress that has drawn fire from Democrats and torn apart Republicans alike. But first, last week's poll results:

While our 2008 Republican Primary straw poll got far fewer votes than our Democratic version, we were again left with a clear winner. Ron Paul received over 60% of the votes cast; no other option managed to pull in more than 10%. To me, these results speak to two underlying causes. First, I believe most of our readers vote Democratic, so many may have abstained from voting. Second, Ron Paul is an Internet darling. Though he consistently polls much lower than other candidates in scientific polling data, other Internet polls show Paul as the clear favorite. There is a vocal portion of right-wing Internet users who love Ron Paul, and I think some of them stopped by and voted in our poll.

This week, we'd like you to weigh in on the current immigration bill (free registration required) that has been making headlines this past week. While previous Seminal polls and general public opinion polling indicate most Americans want to see some kind of change in US immigration policy, the current bill has been criticized by leaders on the left and the right. Do you think the immigration bill is a good one? Does it go far enough to secure our borders and enforce our laws? Does it offer immigrants enough legal options like a large guest worker program? Please let us know your opinion and vote in our sidebar at right.

We need a choice for people who are torn - that's where I'm at, personally. I think something needs to be done about immigration but it seems this bill is a big compromise that pleases almost no one.

Hey for once I am actually in the majority here. Imagine that!

Imagine! I would say the most striking result of this poll is the fact that only 1 person felt no immigration reform was necessary. While Americans can't agree as to what kind of immigration reform is necessary, all are fed up with the current system. Congress should work harder to find a good bill instead of killing it, as they have done. That is the real failure, in my opinion.
