Links 8/16: Republicans Retire, Prosecution and Death, Framing in Iraq, Elvis Lives!

I’ll have more to say on this later, but for now: High schools are increasingly allowing students to specialize and choose a “major” to concentrate on freshman year.

The U.S. government’s premier terrorism case has ended in a conviction for Jose Padilla on charges of conspiracy to murder, kidnap and maim people overseas.

Along with Hastert, Ohio Republican Deborah Price will not seek another term in Congress, opening the way for Democrats to pick up even more seats in 2008.

From The Blogs

Should the media, instead of exposing news stories, start exposing the framing and spin around those stories?

More from The Agonist: This is true courage, and this is standing up for what you believe in.

You’ve heard about magic September, right? That’s when General Petraeus, God of all things Iraq, was going to tell Congress and the American people exactly how the surge was working out. It was supposed to be perfect. He’d come. He’d tell it like it is. And we’d all get to make an informed decision. Well, sorry to say but it’s not going to work out that way. First, there was the revelation that the White House will be writing the report, not Petraeus. Now, Bush wants Petraeus to testify before Congress in a closed door session, depriving the American people of unfiltered information. Anyone want to take a guess at what this report is going to say? Kagro X knows.

Video Of The Day

30 years ago today, Elvis Presley died. In his honor, here’s my favorite Elvis tune:

Long live rock! It’s open thread time, got anything you want to say to the Internet?

I can appreciate everything that Elvis did for music in America, even abroad. I was born when this movie was made and I have never accepted the claim that he is the ” King of rock ” Thats just utter bullshit! if anyone really looks at rocks roots, even the 60s had SERIOUS rock that elvis paled next to.

On the Repubs dropping like flies, glad to see it. I’m sure there will be plenty more.

On the Petraeus briefing, this is really a low move. I’m glad ANSWER is rocking out with a massive protest on September 15th. I’m also glad The Seminal will be there in style.
