Relaxing Crack Sentences, Scooter Libby Drops It Like He’s Hot, Peru and Private Investors, Giuliani Quiz

The Supreme Court relaxes sentencing guidelines for crack cocaine offenses. Meanwhile, the sentencing guidelines still abide by the 100-to-1 ratio in crack cocaine sentencing versus powder cocaine sentencing. That is, if an crack offender is caught with 5 grams, he/she will get the same sentence as someone who is caught with 500 grams of powder cocaine. This, of course, is a horribly classist and racist guideline, since the bulk of crack users are minorities and in poverty. While the news today is positive, there is still a huge disparity in sentence guidelines.

In more justice-filled news, Scooter Libby drops his appeal plea in the CIA leak case. Perhaps he’s been feeling the heat from Waxman and his call for Mukasey to investigate, or he’s giving Mukasey some leeway. Either way, the conviction stands, and we should still be angry that Bush commuted his sentence.

Peruvian President Alan Garcia plans to open up indigenous lands to private investors, a practice that did not come into practice until the administration of Alberto Fujimori. In related news, Fujimori’s is being tried on murder and kidnapping charges for offenses committed during his rule.

And it’s time for the Giuliani quiz! Who said “[He] didn’t bring us together, our pain brought us together. . . . We would have come together if Bozo was the mayor.”?
