Support Dodd's Filibuster: Stop Retroactive Immunity! [UPDATED]

by Jason Rosenbaum  ::  Filed Under U.S. Domestic Issues  ::  December 14th, 2007 @ 11:27 am EST

From the Dodd campaign:

In a few hours, Majority Leader Harry Reid will ask for something called a "motion to proceed" on FISA, effectively disregarding Chris Dodd's "hold" on the bill.

Remember when this all started playing out? A lot of people rushed to send out strongly worded press releases about how committed they were to "supporting a filibuster."

Call or email the Senators that pledged to support a filibuster and ask them to be there when it happens to pick up the ball after Chris Dodd can go no longer.

Leadership is demonstrated through action.

Let me rephrase that for you.

In a few hours, "Majority" Leader Harry Reid will screw over Chris Dodd, the Democratic party, the Constitution, and the American people by using his power and procedural prowess to give George Bush exactly what he wants, immunity for lawbreaking telecom companies.

Harry Reid is not a Democratic leader, he's a traitor.

Fortunately, some Senators, most notably Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama, have pledged to support Dodd's filibuster and stand up for what's right. The Dodd campaign is asking you to call them or write them now to make sure they stick to their word.

I'm asking you for a bit more. Dodd will need a lot of support to sustain his filibuster. Call your Senator too and ask them to join in. We'll need the help of as many lawmakers as we can get to prevent retroactive immunity from becoming law. So give them a call!

If Harry Reid won't fight for his party, we all have to.

Update: Senator Reid's office has this statement. You should read it. It's a testament to ineffective leadership and compromise for the sake of compromise. Reid is putting Senatorial process before issues. He is refusing the bend or break his own rules to make sure immunity, something he says he is against, gets passed, just like Bush wants. This isn't how Republicans play ball, and that's why they were so effective at advancing their agenda over the last 15 years.

Reid, if you're really with us, you'll break the rules. But clearly you're not.

Reid is looking weaker and weaker every day. We need to get him out of "leadership".

None of this matters because retroactive immunity is unconstitutional.

Would it surprise you if I told you the CEO of GE/NBC donated to Reid, and Bush in the same week of 2003? Leahy, one of the Democratic architects of this bill, is also on the list of recipients. It surprised me at first, but then I realized the government was paying them for weapons, medical equipment, and green technology at the same time. So… they get contracts and favorable legislation for their CEO buddies no matter who gets elected.

The good news is that Senator Reid's website says the issue will be looked at again on Monday at noon, so we have the weekend to get the word out to local media and our representatives. Everyone should pitch in and contact someone about this - because it seems like our politicians only listen to us when we're really really loud.

Since when did it matter to the Bush administration or the Congress that something is unconstitutional?

Interesting that the only person in jail is the guy who refused to participate in the warrantless wiretap, Qwest CEO Joseph Nacchio. Somebody give that guy a get out of jail free card.

He was charged with defrauding investors and then has the scruples to say no to the NSA even though ALL of his peers acquiesced? Sounds like a frame job to me.

As for retroactive immunity or anything else being unconstitutional, dream on.
