The cross-border offensive is heating up between Turkey and northern Iraq. Today, Turkish warplanes bombed Kurdish guerilla camps on the Iraqi side of the border, adding to risks that further escalation will continue to destabilize the region.

In the race for the democratic nomination, President Bush’s infamous “No Child Left Behind” program has become a central topic of conversation. The program faces more problems than lack of funding, but finding an acceptable solution to the problems of education is a far more daunting task than the leading politicians might imagine, but the politicians meet the needs of America’s educators without simply adding to the President’s veto count?

The CIA continues to receive a firestorm of accusations over the interrogation tapes that were destroyed in 2005. Now there are new questions not only about the tapes’ destruction but about whether they were withheld from the 9/11 commission investigation. Again raising the question: Why make the tapes in the first place?

Education’s going to be a real thorny issue, mostly because of NCLB. I mean, in theory, it’s a pretty good idea, or at least it’s easy to sell to the American people. Schools need to perform, so we measure their performance. That’s NCLB. But it doesn’t work. And so someone will have to come up with a sellable, workable solution. It’s not easy.
