California Prison Budget, Musharraf and Karzai, Bush and Schwarzenegger, the Balkans in 08

by Alex Thurston  ::  Filed Under Daily Briefing  ::  December 26th, 2007 @ 1:39 pm EST

In California, prison costs soar, partly because prisons need to give better healthcare, but partly because of “tough on crime” policies. Here’s an idea: keep monitoring the rapists, keep locking up the violent criminals, but stop incarcerating nonviolent criminals. And drop the “Three Strikes” stuff; instead take the time to review each case on its own merits.

Pakistan’s Musharraf and Afghanistan’s Karzai pledge closer cooperation. This is probably just talk, but apparently is a step forward over the hostility that has characterized past relations.

Bush and Schwarzenegger butt heads over who gets to regulate vehicle emissions. Ron Paul fans, care to tell us who’s right here?

The BBC speculates on what 2008 holds for the Balkans.

Union labor has priced itself out of the global marketplace.

That’s a very sobering and accurate statement. The future of labor, if it lies anywhere, will be in unionizing internationally, and as the article points out, working with employers. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that happy, well compensated employees are more productive and tend to make a company more successful. Unions need companies and vice-versa. They aren’t mortal enemies.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some pretty serious unrest in America if there was a real economic downturn, and the housing crisis just might be it.
