Who Killed Bhutto? Domestic Terrorists, Bush Hates The Troops, Washington Redux |

Always the universal punching bag, Al-Qaeda has been blamed by the Pakistani government for Benazir Bhutto’s assassination. They may be right (they do have a transcript of a conversation they say was intercepted), but the situation is likely more complicated than simple “terrorism.” Bhutto could have been murdered by someone acting alone, by an unknown terrorist group, by the Pakistani military (working with or without Musharraf and/or with or without terrorist groups), or by the government itself. Or did she die from a skull fracture? Why knows? The government is saying so many contradictory things. According to some, Pakistani police abandoned their posts right before Bhutto was assassinated. No matter the cause, blaming Bhutto’s killing on simply one group - mere hours after her death - seems suspicious at worst and unintelligent at best.
The NY Times has a spectacular timeline of Bhutto’s political history. Like any leader, she’s not the saint many make her out to be, yet she had the charisma to bring about change in Pakistan.
Violence against abortion clinics has resumed in New Mexico after a decades long lull. Notice how the article never once mentions the word terrorist. Oh, right, how could I be so dumb. White people can’t be terrorists!
From The Blogs
Bush says he will veto a pay raise for the troops. Merry Christmas! (More on the defense authorization bill from me later…)
David Letterman has negotiated his own deal with the Writer’s Guild, bringing the show back to the airwaves. If the AMPTP doesn’t want to negotiate, maybe each individual show that values worker’s rights will. In fact, you can sign the petition urging Comedy Central to do just that.
Video Of The Day
It’s been featured here before, but Matt Stoller reminded me of this video again today, and it’s worth another viewing. Go Washington!
It’s open thread time! What’s on your mind?
