Chris Dodd Told To STFU On FISA [UPDATED]

by Jason Rosenbaum  ::  Filed Under U.S. Domestic Issues  ::  January 15th, 2008 @ 4:08 pm EST

As Tim Tagaris points out, when a Senator stands up for the Constitution and makes a fuss over our civil liberties, “justice for rocking the boat is meted out by anonymous aides on the pages of ‘Roll Call’

Democrats said the FISA fight - which could come in the first week or two of the new session - may be an early test of whether Dodd’s presidential campaign has caused any significant strains in his relationships with colleagues.
One senior Democratic aide said that while some Democrats could have been irked in the heat of the moment, most understand it is the nature of presidential campaigning for candidates to tackle hot-button issues and to rely heavily on veteran staff for day-to-day work in the Senate.

“I think it’s too early to say” whether there are any hard feelings, the Democratic aide said. “But I think you could term it as a key few months for him” in terms of his reintegration into the Caucus. “It will be interesting to watch when he returns,” the aide said.

So this is the payback a Senator gets for standing up for what should be a universal American value? For standing against unconstitutional retroactive immunity (and for jeopardizing telecom company campaign donations), Chris Dodd’s colleagues in the Senate are planning on telling him to shut up, get back in line, and keep your head down like the rest of us?

No wonder we can’t pass a bill.

If Dodd’s fellow Democratic Senators don’t see the value in taking a strong stance once in a while, I do. And so do thousands of other Americans. Why don’t you take a moment and show your solidarity?

Send Chris Dodd an email. Tell him that even if his Senate colleagues are annoyed by his resolve to fight against telecom immunity, you aren’t. Tell him that you’ll stand with him. Tell him you appreciate him doing his job to serve the American people, not the telecom companies or not his fellow Senators.

Tell him never to sit down and shut up.

Update

I just received this email from the Dodd campaign:

Dear Jason -

No, I’m not retiring from the Senate - I’m working hard as ever, to restore the Constitution, stop that terrible FISA bill and put a Democrat in the White House.

But after our incredible journey campaigning for the Presidency, there is something that does need retiring: our debt.

My internet team tells me the campaign inbox was flooded with messages of thanks and inquiries about how you can continue to help now that the presidential campaign is over.

Today, you can help by contributing financially to our effort to retire the campaign debt.

I’ve spent the past days with my wife and family, unwinding after a grueling process that changed the debate at home and abroad — that is our legacy from the campaign.

FEC rules preclude me from using the email list to talk much about the war, the upcoming FISA fight and other issues we championed throughout the campaign, but let me assure you: our work will continue with the same commitment you have come to expect from me.

But today, can you help retire our campaign debt?

Unfortunately, this email list and our campaign website can only exist to help retire the debt, but the good news is that I’ll soon have a new site, my internet team has promised to see through what we started last October, and you’ll be hearing from us soon about the next steps on FISA.

Thank you, so much, for everything.

Chris Dodd

If you’ve got a few dollars burning a hole in your pocket, why don’t you help Dodd retire his campaign debt so he can get back to fighting for the Constitution in the Senate. He’ll take $25, $10, whatever you’ve got. Please donate!

    Thanks! Here’s my email:

    Senator Dodd:

I support your strong stance against telecom immunity, even if you Senate colleagues don’t. I and all my readers at theseminal.com are behind you 100%, as are thousands of other Americans.

Keep standing up for the Constitution and never back down, no matter what others may tell you. We are behind you.

Even better… make a donation to his campaign! Even though he is out of the race he still has debts from his campaign to retire.

Here is Mine

Senator Dodd:

Though I am not from Connecticut, I must say that I was heartened that you felt strongly enough about the constitution and the rule of law, that you took a meaningful stand to stop telecom immunity. It seems as if the other members of the Senate Democratic caucus are more concerned with unity than with what is right, at least according to a recent article in Roll Call. I find it extremely disturbing that the lone senator to lead the charge against telecom amnesty and for the voice of the majority of the people, is now being castigated for it. But I know that you understand that this fight is bigger than some pedantic squabble in the Senate, and I have complete confidence that you won’t let the proverbial “bastards” get you down. You’re doing what’s right, in standing up against telecom immunity, and the rest of us, who care about the constitution and the rule of law, and who write and call our legislators to no avail, thank you for being a strong voice not only for your constituents, but for all of us. Please, continue to fight the good fight, and know that we patriotic americans are all behind you.

Best Wishes

    Oh for fuck’s sake.

Do you really believe this little kabuki play? Do you think Dodd is the Mr. Smith of the 21st century?

He knows EXACTLY why Reid didn’t honor the hold on the FISA bill - whay isn’t he saying what that is?

    Because he’s in on it.

    Wake up already.

No, I don’t think he’s the second coming. But by the same token, he’s far better than Feinstien, who doesn’t seem to give a shit how many letters opposed to amnesty she receives from her constituents (i know, because I wrote a few). It’s good to encourage him on this, because he, Wyden, Feingold, and a few others are all the opposition that exists at the moment. Better some than none.

point of clarification: amnesty == telecom immunity

Nice of him to solicit for money. I found that cute.

I guess we should pay his campaign debt just like the welfare debt proposed by all the other dems. Why the hell should I pay for this guy mismanaging his campaign finances?

Mismanaging campaign finances? Not really. All candidates go into debt when they run for office. Regrettable, but true.

Really? I can think of one that never did. But I let you figure out who it is. >Hint hes a republican currently running for the white house.

OOOH, OOOH! I know, pick me!

Is it that guy that they try to silence and the neocons loathe? That one that got 6 million in one day from his supporters? The one that sends money BACK to the treasury every year because he runs such a tight ship?

Who could that be? And how are we privileged enough to have such a man running for president?
