Clinton’s Nevada Victory, Terrorists and Martyrs, Canada apologizes for US appearance on Torture Watch List |
|

In her second straight victory, Senator Hillary Clinton won the Nevada caucuses today. Her victory over Obama was slight, with Clinton receiving 51% of the vote and Obama receiving 45%; John Edwards came in third with only 4% of the vote. But the race isn’t over yet, both Clinton and Obama are on the way to South Carolina, where the next round of voting will take place.
For the GOP contenders, Romney’s support form Mormon voters propelled him to the front of the pack in Nevada.
“Soon after their burial, a cult developed around them and the graves became centres of pilgrimage for many in the area…For many, these graves are holy, and touching them will cure illnesses.” In Kandahar, Afghanistan, victims of the US “war on terror” are viewed by many as innocent martyrs, and their graves are considered holy. In the eyes of the people, it seems America’s “terrorists” are winning.
Fourteen people were arrested in Barcelona, Spain today for their possession of bomb-related material and their suspected connection with an Islamist terror network. In Pakistan, five men were arrested and charged with planning to attack a Shia procession in Karachi.
On Thursday, it was reported that the United States and Israel were listed among other countries in which prisoners may face torture and abuse. Now, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Bernier has issued an apology for the release of the manual that “contains a list that wrongly includes some of our closest allies”.
The CBC may be willing to take M. Bernier’s apology at face value, but Andy Worthington over at the HuffPo is a little less forgiving.
Though US ambassadors may consider it offensive to find the US “on the same list with countries like Iran and China”, torture and the death penalty, keep the US in close company with these countries–whether diplomats are willing to admit it or not.
Clinton, terrorism and torture paint a rather depressing picture. What are you reading that might brighten the mood? This is an open thread. Post to your little heart’s content.
