Sunday Morning Open Thread

by Josh Nelson  ::  Filed Under Daily Briefing  ::  March 2nd, 2008 @ 6:17 am EST

I was pretty upset when I read the headline on Drudge this morning about Obama considering Republicans for his cabinet. Now that I know he is referring to Hagel and Lugar, I feel much better.

The NYT explores the question of whether or not the media is favoring Senator Obama over Senator Clinton. Honestly, if they aren’t, it may be time to start checking their pulses.

New Rule: People who voted for the Military Commissions Act, the Authorization to Use Military Force and the Patriot Act are no longer allowed to question Democrats patriotism.

This is an open thread, have at it.

Love Hagel’s rhetoric…hate the way he votes. I’m not sure he’s trustworthy.

That’s pretty much the problem everyone has with “bipartisanship” in general, it’s all talk but right wing action, which causes people to complain about Obama. Not saying that’s how Obama is going to go, but that’s been the track record in the past. While I believe Obama will do bipartisanship from our side, it’s hard to blame people sometimes from feeling nervous about it.

Watching that interview I think Abrams comes off as like a leftwing version of Fox News. He was willing to talk over his guest, trying to push his point at all costs, and then sends him off with a joke about a lapel pin. Kingston came across as a more civil individual, despite his weaker position.

It’s “curious” that he doesn’t want to wear a lapel pin? This may seem like a simplistic claim, but wearing a symbol on one’s suit jacket does not make one a “patriot”. In fact, some might consider flag apparel and paraphernalia an inappropriate use of the flag and that which it represents. Sure, lapel pins are slightly more dignified than screen printed flag decals on Fourth of July Day t-shirts, but if one must wear one’s patriotism on one’s lapel, the true patriotic sentiment must not run very deep.

One would hope that we could move away from these superficial markers of ‘patriotism’ in favor of something more substantial, but apparently the Right still favors superficial ‘patriotism’ in the same way it promotes superficial ‘family values’…
