10 Years in Darfur?

If we have a hundred years of Iraq to look forward to, at least the UN/AU force only anticipates ten in Darfur:

The commander of the UN-African Union force in Darfur has said the mission could last for the next 10 years. Gen Martin Luther Agwai told the BBC that tension with Chad made the conflict more difficult to resolve.

The success of the UN-AU force will depend on what happens both internally in Sudan and externally with the international community, he said. Peace talks stalled at the end of last year and there is little sign of fresh negotiations starting any time soon.

Violence is ramping up again in Darfur as well as patches of central southern Sudan, bringing the country even closer to failed state status. 10 years with only 9,000 troops?  Try never. Better hope the international community comes through with some helicopters and manpower soon. You think problems in Chad make it difficult to solve Darfur? Try this: Sudan is destabilizing Chad. So the longer you wait, the worse it’s likely to get. It’s been 5 years already with no sign of any change of heart from Khartoum.

Step up the pressure on China, up the commitments, shame the US and the EU, and remember all the times we said never again. This is a disgrace.
