Morning Thread: Fallon Roundup |
|
|
Yesterday Admiral Fallon, commander for Iraq and Afghanistan, resigned amid strong speculation that he was pushed out for disagreeing with Bush about Iran. The administration and Fallon deny this; Fallon “insisted he did not disagree with the Bush administration over Iran but perceptions of a rift made it difficult for him to do his job.” Sean-Paul at the Agonist sees this as “a serious blow to any sane policy in the Middle East.”
Think Progress compiled some of the moments when the “rift” went beyond just “perceptions.”
Some say Fallon’s departure is a victory for Petraeus, scheduled to give another politically charged testimony around September 11th this year.
Finally, as Brandon Friedman says, this all comes back to “a Presidential administration that thinks it knows more about war fighting than the men and women in uniform.” The chickenhawks are still trampling on the voices of experience and judgment.
Should we be nervous?

Some, including some high ups, say this changes nothing policy-wise. I do think Fallon was an asset to our side, and so it’s a shame to lose him, but I’m not sure this move signals impending war.
