Obama Can Win Pennsylvania, But He Needs Your Help

by Josh Nelson  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008  ::  March 12th, 2008 @ 2:15 pm EST

The Pennsylvania primary will be held on April 22nd. What many people don’t realize, however, is the fact that Pennsylvania has a closed primary, in which only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary. Some are saying this is a bad thing for Obama, but overall it may be for the best. First, we won’t have to deal with this bullshit. In both Texas and Ohio, likely due to Limbaugh’s trickery, a full ten percent of voters in the Democratic primary were Republicans.

So where does he pick up the votes?

He is going to need young people and college students. In the most similar state to Pennsylvania demographically, Obama dominated among younger voters.

Among Ohio Democratic primary voters aged 17 to 29, 67 percent went for Obama, 32 percent for Clinton.

Fortunately, Pennsylvania has quite a few colleges and universities. Unfortunately, though, the deadline for these students to register to vote is March 24th, which is quickly approaching.

Here is what you can do

Contact every college student you know in Pennsylvania. Urge them to register to vote. Rock the vote has a handy tool they can use to do so. Send them a link to this PA Student Voting Guide (pdf), and encourage them to distribute it amongst their friends. If they need more information, send them here.

Do you know Republicans or Independents in Pennsylvania who may vote for Obama? Urge them to register as Democrats immediately, as they are subject to the same March 24th deadline.

We all know that Obama can win the people of Pennsylvania over with 5 weeks to campaign there. But in order to get the votes, he needs the state’s massive college student population to register to vote by March 24th.

If all of the college and university students can campaign for Sen. Obama in their communities, that could help. Sen. Obama is dependending on you, the future leaders of America.
