Obama’s on His Game

by Alex Thurston  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008  ::  March 13th, 2008 @ 11:21 pm EST

When Obama faces off against John McCain, one on one, he will smack the old man down. Not only that, he’ll bring a sweep of Democrats with him into power, from Senate seats and congressional districts across the country.

Here at the Seminal, publicly and privately, despite our qualified support for Barack Obama we were initially disappointed by how he ran his campaign. But since January he’s built his confidence and poise, and since South Carolina he’s appeared more and more presidential. The turning points, for me, were the way he handled Bill O’Reilly in this clip, where he appears calm and respectful but also firm and…how to put it…on my side:

And the way he presented himself in this ad, which is probably the best visual representation of Obama’s movement that I have seen:

But only today did I feel he was coming into his stride against McCain. Obama is clearly eyeing the general, and he’s good at it. He handles McCain exactly how I would recommend: acknowledge his strengths (supposedly, “independent judgment” and being above interest politics), and then mercilessly cut him down, all while tying McCain to Bush.

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama said Thursday that Sen. John McCain reversed his position on President Bush’s deep tax cuts in order to win the Republican presidential nomination, one of his sharpest criticisms yet of the Arizona senator he hopes to face this fall.

Criticizing GOP efforts to extend major tax cuts from Bush’s first term and to eliminate the estate tax, Obama said: “These are all steps that John McCain rightly said were irresponsible when they first came up.”

“He made a decision to reverse himself on that,” Obama told reporters as he flew from Chicago to Washington for a series of Senate votes on budget issues.

“That was how, I guess, you got your ticket punched to be the Republican nominee,” he said of McCain. “But he was right then, and he’s wrong now.”

Brilliant. Rovian, except for the good guys.

If Obama keeps honing these attacks against McCain, I think we can be confident going into the general. And that’s not all. As this brilliant and detailed diary by Silver Spring shows, Obama has huge coattails. Check out the maps and you’ll see what I mean…and yes he does much better than the Monster Who Shall Not Be Named.

Keep it up Barack.

That’s freaking awesome. I remember seeing the first clip on fox news and thinking these people can’t be serious about their claims. One thing I’ve noticed about fox news is that it’s completely biased, and over the years I’ve slowly begin disliking the factor, he tends to have this attitude that if you don’t see it his way, then you’re just not worth listening to.

I don’t remember if you guys remember when he appeared at Hilary’s campaign and all he did was stand there from a far and greeted her from a distance as she acknowledged him. That’s it, he didn’t barge in or anything like that, he was calm and collected, a completely different attitude towards Obama’s campaign, “Fear and balanced?” I don’t think so.
