Midday Open Thread: 4,000

by Alex Hanna  ::  Filed Under Daily Briefing  ::  March 24th, 2008 @ 12:06 pm EST

The 4,000th American life has been claimed by the Iraq war, according to the AP’s count.

Of those 4,000, 97% occurred after May 1, 2003, after Bush declared major combat organizations over.

Where has the anti-war movement gone? Cindy Sheehan? Anyone?

Note: I was just about to publish this when I got an email citing Senator Robert Byrd’s denouncement of the resolution authorizing war over five years ago.

This is the Tonkin Gulf resolution all over again. Let us stop, look and listen. Let us not give this president or any president unchecked power. Remember the Constitution.

Of course, no one really takes the Old Byrd seriously anymore.

I’m a Soldier in the U.S. Army and when I heard news of the 4000 death mark I became sick to my stomach. I’m lucky enough to have been to Iraq and return home to my family but so many of my fellow Soldiers have not been as fortunate. And in my heart i feel like every one of those 4000 deaths our president is to be blamed for.

We’ve opened up a discussion on our blog so I can talk to people and answer their questions and hopefully make people understand that not all military are supporting this war and that every one of those deaths was important and unneeded. I’d like it you’d stop by and toss in your two cents.

I’m all for defending my country but U.S. did not need to be defended from Iraq.

Thanks for the comment and link, Mike. What really gets me is that most of these deaths were after “mission accomplished.”

We ask so much of our military, and they accomplish all that we ask. But some tasks, like creating a stable Iraq, are not meant for military solutions.
