Clinton Calls Rev. Wright’s Sermons “Hate Speech”

by Jason Rosenbaum  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008  ::  March 25th, 2008 @ 4:28 pm EST

Hillary Clinton has just crossed another line:

The Clinton campaign had refrained from getting involved in the Wright controversy, but Clinton herself, responding to a question this morning at the Trib, denounced what she said was “hate speech.”

“You know, I spoke out against Don Imus (who was fired from his radio and television shows after making racially insensitive remarks), saying that hate speech was unacceptable in any setting, and I believe that,” Clinton said. “I just think you have to speak out against that. You certainly have to do that, if not explicitly, then implicitly by getting up and moving.”

This is getting ridiculous. A comparison between Don Imus and Reverend Wright is way out of line. Reverend Wright’s comments - which can be seen in full here - were against a racial injustice that actually happened. White Americans did actually enslave African Americans in the not so recent past. This is part of our history, and African Americans can and are angry about it.

Don Imus, as a white man, made fun of a minority in a cruel and degrading way. He wasn’t expounding on history, and he wasn’t even making a point. He was denigrating someone because of her race. This is not what Reverend Wright did. There was no denigration, no cruel discrimination - Wright was expressing anger at history, not going after any living human being because of their race.

It’s apples and oranges.

BooMan has more:

Hillary Clinton has a lot of gall to question her opponent’s choice of church considering her own kooky associations. And I think it would be equally repulsive if Barack Obama chose to make an issue of her decision to worship with Sam Brownback and Rick ‘Man on Dog’ Santorum. Obama certainly could question her faith and what her faith suggests about her political commitments.

Clinton’s decision to question Obama’s choice of church is a bigger problem than her personal tastelessness. Her decision is an arrow aimed directly at the heart of the black community. It is one of the worst acts of public betrayal I have ever seen committed by a Democratic politician in my lifetime, and the most shortsighted and toxic decision I can recall.

If Clinton succeeds in pushing this racial polarization to the point that white people will not vote for Obama, the black community will never, ever, forgive her. This is especially true because she can only win on the backs of the superdelegates.

The kind of black theology practiced by Reverend Wright has existed for decades in America, and as long as most white people don’t have to think about it, we’re all ok. Republicans have decided to push this issue out into the open, which I suppose is their right, but Hillary Clinton should not jump on. Even though African Americans may be breaking for Obama electorally, they have historically made up a key constituency of the Democratic party and were instrumental in electing Democrats - including Bill Clinton. For Hillary to try and wedge whites away from Obama and piss off blacks is an act of murder/suicide.

She should be stopped, and party elders should step in and at least ask her to lay off this issue, if not ask her to suspend her campaign altogether. As I’ve said before, I’m happy if this contest goes on as long as it doesn’t damage the party. If Hillary presses this issue, it will, and she should be stopped.

it’s a sad day for the so-called referees when they have to rely on regular people to do their jobs.

Dead on, Jason. Sad thing is, lots of voters probably agree with her.

Hillary Clinton is truly a nasty piece of work. Even if one does not consider the supposedly inflammatory nature of the Wright sermons, she took an opportunity to promote healing or at least thought provoking discussion, and instead parroted a line that even the conservative nominee and the man he defeated has abandoned.

I have no doubt Hillary would have left her church and the place that introduced her to Jesus because it is abundantly clear that there is no belief, no ethic, no moral, or important relationship she would not gladly sacrifice in order to further her own naked ambition. However, she should get that choice. These are the words of her pastor in the white house for 8 years Dean J Snyder the Senior Minister of the Foundry United Methodist church. The Clintons church while they were in the white house.

A STATEMENT CONCERNING THE REV. JEREMIAH WRIGHT

The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader
whom I have heard speak a number of times. He has served for
decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society.
He has been a vocal critic of the racism, sexism and homophobia
which still tarnish the American dream. To evaluate his dynamic
ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave
injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the
African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a
people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and
violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has
been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions
and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us
who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr.
Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize. This is a
critical time in America%u2019s history as we seek to repent of our racism.
No matter which candidates prevail, let us use this time to listen again
to one another and not to distort one another%u2019s truth.

Over 2 million Americans have seen the full context of the Rev. Wright%u2019s sermon on YouTube. So, when Hillary says it%u2019s out there for people to make up their minds I hope they truly do.

Hillary is a political succubus. She will suck the energy and will from this party until we are broken and defeated.

We have to defeat this person.

Actually Dean Snyder wasn’t the pastor at Foundry while the Clintons were attending. The pastor was J. Philip Wogaman. I know because I attended there during that period. I’m sure Wogaman would have something similar to say, though.

I personally do not feel that continuing to bring up slavery as a reason to be upset with the white man is absolutely ridiculous this many years later. MOVE ON…BUILD A BRIDGE…no one in the last 100 years or more has been enslaved…I am 60 years old and have never had a slave, my mother nor my father’s families had slaves. ENOUGH ENOUGH ENOUGH…you complain but what is it that you think the white population of today, whose parents did not have slaves and whose grandparents did not have slaves, should do for you, you who has NEVER been a slave? The only way to bring peace is to forgive sins that none those of us alive today have done. The majority of people I know, do not agree with the HISTORY that occured in the PAST !! Let’s make a future…I do not want to pay anymore and you should not want to hate anymore…

I beleive that the race issue is now more a concern for the Obama candidacy and the Rev Wright and his association with Farakkan and his sound biytes they have caused me and my wife to change our votes in the upcoming Presidential race Obama can only save his chances of becoming President if he renounces these so-called Black American preachers and tell the American public he is not accepting their money endorsments sentiments or support and he disagrees with their hate filled sermons which he previously stated he did not know about but now is aware of them as the whole world is. Obama show me that you are An American first show me and tell me why you are proud to be an American I do not consider myself a minorty or a christian I am an American
