Foreign Policy dug up this article about foreign policy by John McCain from 1996 and made it accessible online for free. Surprisingly, over a decade later, many of the points are still relevant.

Commenting upon the state of the economy worldwide, France’s President Sarkozy told reporters that he thinks the Euro is too strong. Though his reasoning may be too simplistic, I have to say I agree with Sarkozy. Then again, his criticisms of the U.S. economy are accurate as well.
“Who can think that you can sustainably earn money on debts and push along a mountain of debt without ever wondering who will repay it one day, even if you are the world’s leading economy?”
