John McCain Digs Himself Deeper - Insults Half Of All Muslims

by Jason Rosenbaum  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008, Middle East / South Asia  ::  April 10th, 2008 @ 11:00 am EST

Take a look at what John McCain had to say in response to criticisms of his confusing Sunni and Shiite Muslims for the fifth time:

That’s right. Here’s what he said, word for word (emphasis mine):

I’ve been to Iraq eight times, I know the leaders, I know the situation on the ground. I know that Sunni and Al-Qaeda are closely tied.

Wow. John McCain just insinuated that the Sunni branch of Islam - the largest of the sects - can be identified with Al-Qaeda, and by extension, all Sunni Muslims are closely tied with Al-Qaeda. That’s a pretty horrible misstatement, akin to saying Protestant Christianity is closely tied with the KKK, or the Irish heritage is closely tied with the IRA.

The fact that John McCain would basically call millions of Muslims terrorists is appalling. This is the guy we’re seriously considering making President? Really? As President, he’s going to have to navigate the minefield of Middle Eastern politics, with all the religious and political groups that go along with it. And not only can’t he tell the major factions apart, but he thinks one major branch is “closely tied” with Al-Qaeda.

Sorry folks, McCain may have “experience,” but he doesn’t know shit about foreign policy.

- It’s an honest mistake. I labeled my entire extended family Nazi’s upon finding out about our German heritage. They don’t send me Christmas gifts anymore.

JoeyKittens, You may have committed your Nazi/German gaffe, but is there a chance you will be Commander-in-Chief anytime soon? Are you waking up at 2AM to chug metamucil and argue with imagined Viet Cong captors about waterboarding your prostate?

    JoeyKittens says  ::  April 10th, 2008 @ 2:16 pm EST

    No, I’m not. Our gaffes are similar but we differ in that I don’t flip flop my beliefs on a whim just to scratch out one or two extra votes.

    Let me get this straight, are you talking about Colon Hydrotherapy?

    By the way, Turkey is 99.9% Sunni, is McCain advocating the invasion of Turkey? Turkey did commit the first genocide of the 20th Century against its Armenian Christian minority, yet McCain says the US shouldn’t acknowledge this genocide, for fear of retribution from the Turks.

Haha, I just wanted to congratulate Joe Kittens for following Godwin’s Law in the first comment of a thread.

    Had never heard of it until you mentioned it.

Sunni = 90% of Muslims

I didn’t see or hear anywhere where McCain said “all” Sunni’s are Al Qaeda. And maybe he really does know.

    Jen,

    McCain said “I know that Sunni and Al-Qaeda are closely tied.” The statement itself comes across as ridiculously ignorant - a similar, but more understandable, statement may be “Christianity and the Ku Klux Klan are closely tied” or “Asians and North Korea are closely tied”. Never mind that most Christians frown upon the racist actions of the KKK or that most Asians are not North Koreans (not even discussing the heterogeneity of the NK population). What I’m trying to get across is that McCain is attempting to compare apples and oranges, a population of diverse people, some of whom believe in democracy, some of whom believe in communism, some of whom love and live in America, some of whom hate America, some of whom are educated, and so on .. with a group that can appeal to only a fraction of these people. Some members of Al-Qaeda are not Sunni. Being Sunni does not predispose one to being an Al-Qaeda. Thus, McCain’s statement is rather nonsensical, and only underscores his *lack of understanding* about the real situation on the ground. Sure, he may understand it from a military or tactical standpoint, and hopefully that’s what he meant by his statement - but, with his statement at least, he does not demonstrate a good understanding of the issues in that region.

Maybe this (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/10/us/politics/10mccain.html?_r=1&hp=& oref=slogin&pagewanted=all) is part of McCain’s problem…

So far, Mr. McCain has not established a formal foreign policy briefing process within his campaign. If he needs information or perspective on an issue, advisers say he picks up the phone and calls any number of people, among them Mr. Kissinger, Mr. Shultz or Senators Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, and Joseph I. Lieberman, independent of Connecticut.

Being able to pick up the phone and have Henry Kissinger on the line might be helpful at times, but how does he expect to run the country if he’s constantly making phone calls?

Not to mention all of the wire-tappers who must be eavesdropping on those conversations…

It’s actually way more than half of Islam. Wikipedia says estimates Sunnis make up over 90% of muslims worldwide.
