McCain's Rogues' Gallery (He Calls Them "Supporters")

"[Sen. Obama's] relationship with Mr. Ayers is open to question….Because if you're going to associate and have as a friend and serve on a board and have a guy on your campaign that says he's unrepentant…" Sen. John McCain telling George Stephanapoulos that it is fair to question Obama about his relationships.

Although John McCain tries to claim the high road, he is not above attacking Obama for his supposed association with nefarious folks. If Sen. McCain wants to play that game, no problem–McCain has his own shady associations with convicted felons to explain.

When I wrote about McCain's connections with convicted felon Gordon Liddy, I was just getting started. Here are some more McCain relationships that the good senator needs to explain. The following are all listed as supporters on John McCain's website. This is the tip of the iceberg–there is more to come.

Rep. Peter King–for years, the congressman was alinged with "one of the most violent terrorist groups in recent European history"–the IRA. And I don't mean Individual Retirement Account–I'm talking about a radical group McCain himself has described as killers and thieves. McCain concluded that "anyone, Irish, British, or American who desires…peace, freedom, and justice…must denounce…the IRA and any political organizaion that would associate with them." Sen. McCain, will you denounce Peter King, who once called the IRA "the legitimate voice of occupied Ireland"?

Fred Malek–this former Nixon assistant developed a program that, the Senate Watergate Committee found, was aimed at channeling government money to those who would support Nixon's re-election. Ten years after Watergate, a Republican-led Senate committee refused to act on Malek's nomination to be a governor of the US Postal Service because senators felt he had made conflicting statements under oath regarding the program. When a paranoid Nixon wanted a list of Jewish officials he believed were out to get him, Malek supplied the list. (Malek says he was "just following orders"). Would this man have a place in a McCain administration? Why is McCain proud to call Fred Malek a supporter?

Former GA Attorney General Michael Bowers–this man held himself out as the "defender" of Georgia's moral standards, prosecuting a gay man under so-called anti-sodomy laws even as Bowers himself was carring on a decade-long extramarital affair with his secretary. Hypocrisy and adultery–I guess those are qualifications for being a McCain supporter.

Rep. Ileane Ros-Lehtinen–the "Scientology Congresswoman" is closely tied to the bizarre "Church of Scientology". What's McCain's view of Scientology? Would he accept money from prominent Scientologists, as Ros-Lehtinen does?

Much more to come…
