Israel “Appeases” Syria, aka Two Sovereign Nations Decide to Talk |
|
|
Israel and Syria have been making moves toward diplomacy for some time now, but today they took a bigger step and agreed to “hold indirect talks to reach a comprehensive peace agreement.”
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office said both sides were talking “in good faith and openly”.
The Syrian foreign ministry also confirmed the Turkish-mediated talks, the first since 2000.
The last round of negotiations broke down because of disagreement over the extent of Israel’s possible withdrawal from the Golan Heights.
“The two sides indicated they want to lead these negotiations in a serious spirit so as to achieve complete peace,” said Mr Olmert’s spokesman Mark Regev.
In a statement, Syria’s foreign ministry said: “Both sides have expressed their desire to conduct the talks in goodwill and decided to continue dialogue with seriousness to achieve comprehensive peace.”
So is that appeasement? The article goes on to say that the terms of an agreement might include Syria renouncing its ties with Iran and Israel withdrawing from the Golan Heights. The latter move, the article also notes, “would not be popular with Israelis,” though without specifying which Israelis they mean. As they say, the Israeli parliament might not like it, but large segments (often a majority) of the Israeli public have often indicated a desire for settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict through diplomatic means, including talks with Hamas and other “enemies who are too evil to be appeased.” (See the first link above for more)
So if our steadfast allies can talk to their enemies, tell me again why we can’t?
UPDATE: Israel and Syria have been talking for a year, Olmert says.

Did someone forget to tell you we send billions of american taxpayer dollars to israel every year that is then laundered and put back to politicians in the form of their REAL salary- for doing what Israel wants regardless of what the american people want?
Yep- that’s what the problem is.
So let’s hold our leaders to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty- of which we are a signator- and that treaty prohibits giving money to people with nuclear weapons that don’t follow the treaty.
that would be israel.
If we enforced the logan act, 90% of the congress and senate and all of the white house would be in jail for the next 3 years because of their closed door meeting with Israelis to form policy that matches what they want.
