Don’t Mess with Moyers

by Josh Nelson  ::  Filed Under Media Issues, Special Topics  ::  June 7th, 2008 @ 5:05 pm EST

I’m in Minneapolis right now at the National Conference for Media Reform. I’ll have much more coming tonight and tomorrow, but I just wanted to share this really quickly.

A few hours ago a producer from Fox’s Comedy show, The O’Reilly Factor, started peppering Bill Moyers with asinine questions. Moyers, as you probably could have predicted, made a fool of the guy. Thanks and appreciation go to The Uptake for the video.

For any would be harassers, let this be a lesson to you. Don’t mess with people who are WAY out of your league. If I see Porter Barry around, I’ll be sure to mock him mercilessly.

For good measure, here is Bill’s keynote from this morning.

John C. Randolph says  ::  June 7th, 2008 @ 6:57 pm EST

Wow. A larval O’Reilly clone trying to pull that same shit of not letting someone answer by talking over him.

Moyers should ask him how Andrea Mackris got enough money to buy a condo in Manhattan for cash.

Moyers is a dry drunk asshat, a big government alcoholic liberal gasbag, apologizing for failed Democratic policy since November of 1963.

Who gives a flip what this idiot thinks– about anything?

    rico says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 12:31 am EST

    James is a typical republican fascist. Totally delusional. It’s the other way around, James. Government has ballooned under Bush (dept of homeland security run by a crook with dual citizenship, no less) and a plethora of other incompetent people.
    Your side has wrecked america and you have the nerve to blame it on democrats? Take a look around at what your party has done to us. War without end based on lies, people losing their homes, gas prices going through the roof, criminals at all levels of the government, sexual perverts galore…how can all of this be the democrat’s fault? It’s projection. Your party is finished and so is your greedy sinister idealism.

      John W. says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 12:50 am EST

      All of Congress is to blame. I wouldn’t just blame Republicans.

      Keith says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 2:43 am EST

      “All of Congress is to blame?”

      What planet do you live on? We’ve had EIGHT YEARS of Republicans basically raping this country. A Republican is in the White House, the Congress is half Republican now, and had been a Republican majority until 2006. The Supreme Court is filled with Republican appointees.

      Don’t blame Democrats for the mess this country is in. Republicans have had EIGHT YEARS, and we are in the worst position we’ve been in in over 40 years.

      James says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 9:24 am EST

      You can really make a liberal squirm by pointing out to them that Congress has lower ratings than Bush (liberals being very concerned with the opinions of others, especially the French)

      And I don’t recall defending Bush (Rico naturally assumes that attacking Bush makes his point). If Big Government bothers Rico, then yes, let’s go back to programs starting in 1933 and start shutting them down one by one.

      High gas prices are a product of a weak dollar, brought about by a credit crisis, brought about by the Clinton administration and Congress forcing lenders to make loans to unqualified borrowers. The unintended consequence was a run-up in bad debt, made worse by predatory lenders.

      Don’t blame Bush for it; blame the democrats.

      Larry says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 4:27 pm EST

      James, are you on drugs? The huge majority of loans made to unqualified borrowers were made well after Clinton left office. They were more a product of the fed propping up our economy with low interest rates, and banks giving free money to every person with a pulse.

      As for congress approval ratings, get real. Congress is always going to have low approval ratings because people disapprove of many different aspects of congress. The dems disapprove because the Bush administration is not being shut down by impeachment. The Republicans disapprove because the dems are not approving nominations to the bench. There are a million reasons why the electorate will never approve of congress. However, there is only one reason people disapprove of Bush,. He Sucks!

      Steez says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 9:02 pm EST

      It’s a little ridiculous that people continue to blame the credit crisis on the Fed’s lowering of interest rates rather than the banks and lenders that actually caused it.

      ThePuffin says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 9:24 pm EST

      I don’t get it.

      No question that Bush and this administration have been an abomination–war based on lies, decimation of the Constitution, torture,, ad infinitum, ad nauseum.

      But only an idiot can believe that this Congress, AFTER 2006, has done little more than enable this administration. This Congress could have refused to pass the Military Commissions Act, could have filibustered Alito and Roberts, could have refused to fund the war, refused to repeal habeus corpus, and could have impeached the entire administration for War Crimes, among other things. Any Senator who didn’t exercise their right to filibuster (and any one senator can do it for 24 hours, all alone, before others vote to stop it) any and all of the above, is an enabler. Nancy Pelosi abdicated her duty to “preserve and protect the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic” by taking impeachment off the table. Congressional subpoenas are ignored, and Congress reacts, by doing nothing. What am I missing, that you have perceived?

      Winning elections are irrelevant if the republic fails, and this Congress, the Democratically controlled Congress, has allowed it to happen.

      The fact that you don’t see this terrifies me.

      If I’m missing something, I’m all ears, but this Congress has simply looked out for its political fortunes, this Congress that has a lifetime pension and guaranteed (and paid for by us ) healthcare for life.

      Prove me wrong. C’mon, let’s hear it. I’m all ears and eyes, and if you don’t bring it, you’ll prove again that you are ill-informed and intellectually soft.

      Sorry to be insulting, but I fail to see why I should be polite in the face of ignorance which is both stupendously deep and dangerous.

      So bring it, if you can.

      ThePuffin says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 9:26 pm EST

      The above is directed at Keith, and anyone who agrees with him…

      GSB says  ::  June 9th, 2008 @ 4:52 pm EST

      hey Dumbass,
      Both roberts and alito were nominated and approved before the 2006 midterm elections. Get your facts right before you rant. Impeaching a entire administarion is not as easy as you think. even to get the resolution passed you need two thirds majority in the house and the senate and you very well know, that the dems do not have that either in the house or the senate.

      LaMayimba says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 11:19 pm EST

      I remember in the lead up to the war, like many others I was virulently opposed. Why? Because I actually bothered to READ about the geopolitics of Iraq and its vicinity. I also noted that Hussein had no use for OBL. I did not accept the White House rational and I was among the first demonstrators to hit the streets in New York City.

      Notwithstanding, us so-called “liberals” (a word long-since demonized) were subjected to the utterly mean-spirited spew of those who blindly bought into the Bush agenda - we were dubbed cowards, traitors, tree huggers and much worse. Guess what - now that the dust has settled it is sadly evident that we were correct on each and every count. What a disaster this president and his henchmen have created.

      Unfortunately, 30% of this country, including James I assume, continues to support this president’s agenda and are apparently unaffected by the laundry list of horrors which came to pass over the past 7 years.

      This in itself is mind-boggling - but to now blame the dems ….. oh please!

      Paul says  ::  June 10th, 2008 @ 5:25 pm EST

      Putting aside the asinine idea that Congress forced lenders to make bad loans (holy crap, dude…) it’s hilarious that your comments are attached to a piece about a real journalist being attacked by a know-nothing douchebag armed with nothing but some nonsensical verbal attacks. Irony anyone?

      Good God.

    Veracity says  ::  June 9th, 2008 @ 1:48 am EST

    James, what kind of deluded fool are you?

    We are now in the Bush2 Recession, just like the Bush1 Recession of early 1990s, except then we had just WON the Cold War and Gulf War (1st Iraq war). Bush the Smarter and his two Sec Defenses - Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld - managed to blow through the “Peace Dividend” in no time flat, America was in such a bad recession that discharged Iraq war vet Timmy McVeigh couldn’t find a job in upstate New York, and he “went over the edge” when the Army tried to back-charge him for some $1,200 it claimed it had “overpaid” him.
    But don’t take my word for it… just look here at the US BUDGET DEFICITS chart. See those Red Lines going almost vertically, straight down? Those are the Bush1 and Bush2 Deficits.

    Not to mention, your guy was a WEE, TAD OFF there with his “the war will only cost $5 billion”, “it will only take 120,00 men”, “it will pay for itself”, “bring ‘em on”, and who can forget, “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” leadership.

    But I’m sure you can find some way to blame Democrats for the above abysmal record… just like Joseph Goebbels found a way to blame Poland for the German invasion of that country in 1939.

    You’re such a hypocrite, James: I could say the same about the word “liberal” “tossed around by the right” to the point of being a pejorative–not to mention, Mr. Hypocrite, such vitriol as “dry drunk asshat, a big government alcoholic liberal gasbag”. You’re such a deluded liar, James: Congress reached its low ratings during it’s Republican dominance–all purchased by corporate lobbyists and disaster capitalist government contractors that have raped the national treasury. You’re such a flake, James: how easy it is to blame Clinton–and, of course, a Congress (Democratic, French, or whatever) for compelling all those predatory subprime lenders–after 8 years of a criminal cabal that has irreparably destroyed the greatest nation on earth, and is responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, treason and crimes against he American people, and torture and genocide around the world. Yes, James, you are indeed marked as a fascist–and in spades!

    And, most importantly, James, you’re such a COWARD! What’s really basic about you, James, is the underlying violence. You’re one of the Parsons right out of ‘1984.’ But you’re not alone. You’re among that 30% of the electorate that has obscenely suborned crime in the name of freedom, but cannot “support the troops” by extricating him/herself TO Iraq for the restitution you and “your ilk” owe that country and the world! That is where your “ilk” belongs. Here and now! And if they tear your body apart and hang it from a Fallujah bridge, do you think you, a coward, deserved it? (See–I can be underlyingly violent too…and I’m not squirming.)

    Bill has been harassing a LOT of people. He has his cronies do it for him most of the time these days, like the prick we saw in the video on this page. The deal is this: if you can dish it out but can’t take it, go away. Porter got what he deserved. Bill was too kind referring to him as a journalist. Republicans inspire by hate. People are sick of it. What do they hate? They hate anything that bursts the illusionary bubble they call reality. Porter Barry is just another one of these anti-americans. It’s notable that Porter the Reporter has to rely on Moyers’ generous description of him as a journalist for validation.

That was one of the most heartless pwn jobs I’ve ever seen and I love it. It goes to show you the major difference in courage between Moyers and another former WH press secretary currently selling out the current administration to make a fast buck.

Seer Of All says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 11:49 am EST

If we ignore their actual opinions for a moment (I know, a serious challenge in political discourse), it’s easy to spot Moyers as the more professional person.

While both men are clear and unabashed with their opinions (the easy part), only Moyers can present his opinion without personally insulting his opponent (the hard part). Moyers applies a few labels to O’Reilly and Murdoch, and then supports his statements with quotes. Porter baldly returns the labels against Moyers personally, as conclusions without any support whatsoever.

Moyers never once insults Porter.

Instead, Moyers repeatedly stresses their common bond of being journalists and producers. Moyers not only keeps his cool in the face of vicious personal attacks, but goes the extra mile in reaching out to Porter. Moyers basically teaches Porter, by live example, how to be a professional journalist. Moyers even offers to help Porter in his career.

Too bad Porter was in no mood to listen. His loss.

It’s too difficult, and pointless to argue with the Robotnicants. They have screwed this country up, through pure unadulterated greed, especially since the coup in 2000, when the simian was allowed to squat in the White House. Yet when this is brought up in conversation they find somewhere to run and hide, by lying their crazy tails off. These Robotnicants are the harbingers of doom for this once great nation.

Carol says  ::  June 8th, 2008 @ 7:23 pm EST

This video made my day. I’m so tired if this kind of “reporting”–ask the question, then ask the same or another question while the person being interviewed is trying to answer. Then after the question has been answered, ask it again and do not allow an answer. When the person being interviewed has had it and blows a gasket, show that clip of the video on television.

This is not journalism. Fortunately Bill Moyers has been around too long and is much too smart to be beaten by this tactic. He wiped the floor with the Poor Porter. He did this by not losing his cool (an amazing feat), and calmly answering the man’s question, repeatedly, until the man looked foolish.

The best part of the video, though, was at the end when the tables were turned. Porter the “reporter” was on the defensive, complaining about being asked the same question multiple times after he’d already answered it. This in itself was endlessly amusing. But there was more.

Question: “Do you consider what you just did journalism?”
Answer from Porter the %u201CReporter%u201D: %u201CMr. Moyers just called me one!%u201D
Conclusion: Porter%u2019s opinion of his own performance is based on Bill Moyers%u2019 opinion. In other words, %u201CBill Moyers called me a reporter; therefore I am a reporter!%u201D
Priceless!!

A note to Porter the %u201CReporter%u201D, because I want to help: The best interviewers are the ones that are the best listeners. You cannot talk and listen at the same time. Bill Moyers is one of the best listeners on television. If you want to become a real reporter, pick yourself up off the floor after this embarrassing episode and take up Mr. Moyer%u2019s offer of employment.

Why do Democrats protest as if thier positions are unasailable? Because at times thier ins’t such a thing as honest debate. We are still debating Global Warming. I am in Indiana a very landlocked state. In Indianapolis, the third largest city in the WORLD not located on or near a navigable water source, and its flooded, with several large towns and cities to my south completely devestated. The humidity? Is near 100 percent and this week our weather isn’t temperate as usual or even tropical, its the same patern you would find in a rain forrest. A bloody rain forrest. That’s the first time in the near three hundred year history of our desctriptions of Climate in my state where such conditions have existed. This is record flooding in an area where it simply should not exist. I am tired of debating questions like this or on the issue of meeded infrastructure improvements, while I am now watching bridges washed away, entire interstates inundated. Get your self serving head out of your ass and try and see things from the persepective of people who would rather not see the human toll of issues of “debate” become a reality. The same reason I hate debating while 100,000 people who died of preventable illness in America are being burried and families are being kicked out of thier homes and businesses because of predatory lending and debts often incurred simply because they got sick. We need to focus on domestic issues and let the government do its damned job with no more privitization and no bid cost pluss contracts at home and in Iraq. Gas is four dollars a gallon and we have one party with Gas lobbyists in the White House and the other disavowing the practice of accpeting campaign donations from lobbyists at all. Whether or not that practice is 100 percent accepted or not the reality remains that one party is currently working against the publics interest and the other is at the very least making steps to be more egalitarian and take on domestic issues that matter without the traditional obsfucation that is being thrown the way on the other side. Either lead or get the hell out of the way. Stop bashing the government and then asking us to hand you the keys to the country. For that matter get the hell out of this forum. I am expressing myself here in the same admittedly vitriolic format that many on the right utelize but I am doing it because I have a right to be angry I have the right to express my dissatisfaction. Be glad I am writing about my dissatisfaction about the fact our energy policy, foreign policy, and environmental policy are being dictated by oil companies and not by the American people. People are damned angry and they have a right to be and its real anger not the perverted rage of a demogauge like Bill O. Its the cool cerebral anger of a man like Moyers, when you believe deeply in this country and its institutions and that power is being abused clearly with impunity.

It does my old, shameless liberal heart good to see the example of a real journalist, and veteran reporter like Bill Moyers contrasted so sharply with what passes for television producers and journalists in this day and age.
I’m old enough to remember Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Howard K. Smith, Morley Safer, and even a youngster named Dan Rather. Having traveled a bit, and made a spot of money here and there is a freelance writer and journalist, I know the basic rules of the game and I remember the allegiance to truth that used to be a part of the public trust that belong to the media before corporate empires, greed, and ratings took their heavy toll.
It’s astounding to me that almost 40 years have passed since two journalists working on a story helped bring down a crooked American President. We live now in the shadow of a generation that has never known the real power of the Free Press as a beacon of truth, truly balanced viewpoints, and most important the public trust which entitle all broadcasters the free use of American broadcast airwaves. Perhaps it is time for someone in power, or perhaps better yet, someone who will be empowered, to ask again after almost 40 years if these muckrakers, and those who fund the muckrakers are truly interested in the public trust that built their empires, rather than the abuse of the public trust which perpetuates them.
