Welcome to the new Internet, where you pay per byte of bandwidth and can no longer quote parts of Associated Press stories without paying per word. (h/t Making Light)

Horray!

(P.S. Boycott the AP!)

AP generally sucks anyways, so I’m tempted to say no big loss, but I’d love to be able to comment on their poor journalism without running into these hilarious fees. this is all funny in a bizarro-world way…

This is astonishingly short-sighted. I guess they see their future as being in some corner of the Web where no one visits and no one knows they exist.

i’m dumbfounded. this seems to go against every and all conventions of quoting or citing anything whatever. i mean, hasn’t proper procedure when quoting others’ work been to cite your sources? it’s not like the issue at stake is plagiarism. according to some guidlines on plagiarism, a passage is considered to be plagiarized as soon as the number of words adopted directly in sequence exceeds five. so it seems that AP, by starting their count at five words, is prohibiting all direct quoted references of their work, unless the latter is paid for. aside from the fact that this seems remarkably unprecedented in any genre whatsoever, it also seems to go distinctly against AP’s interests, since it, inadvertently perhaps, undermines their credibility by criminalizing the unpaid quotation of their material and thus making it difficult and/or costly, in practice, to reference AP as a reliable news source. amazing.

Yeah, what Caspar said.

I can’t believe I have to “license parts of this article…

Nevermind, I already owe them $12.50!
