Dems Caving on FISA

by Chris Edelson  ::  Filed Under U.S. Domestic Issues  ::  June 19th, 2008 @ 12:28 pm EST

Apparently Steny Hoyer (D-MD) is making a deal to amend FISA–or to capitulate, as McJoan at Daily Kos aptly puts it.  The deal reportedly includes what is essentially a get out of jail free card for telecoms that did the Bush admin’s bidding in spying on Americans in violation of FISA.  This is breathtaking–why in the world would Dems cave on this now?  As Josh Nelson has eloquently explained, this is about basic constitutional protections.  President Bush decided that he had the authority to violate federal statutory law and to enlist private companies in his illegal scheme.  That’s bad enough–what is absolutely astounding is that Democrats appear ready to endorse and condone President Bush’s constitution shredding behavior.   I might understand, though I still wouldn’t agree, if Democrats felt political pressure to give in to a popular president (e.g. in the days after 9/11).  But this is a failed presidency with historically low approval ratings.  What, exactly are Democrats afraid of?  Democrats and Republicans alike should be standing up for the United States Constitution.  This is a nauseating cave-in and it’s going to depress the hell out of progressives (or anyone) who follows this stuff closely.

When will Democrats learn acting like Republicans is not the way to win votes???

Hilarious, isn’t it? This FISA amnesty issue has been an all-out war for what-now ? eight months… And in the end it’s all falling just the way the oligarchists wanted it to.

Never have I felt more justified in tuning out! Never have I been more certain that these past months of hermitous self-segregation - from all the media outlets and my erstwhile concerns of civil liberties, governance, and law - were perfectly rational and oh-so good for the soul than in this very moment.

You see, gentlemen, there is nothing you can do, and no amount of phone calls, emails, or protest signs that will change the course our lords and monarchs set. All you can accomplish is the provocation of a delay, so that your representatives can appear to share your concerns, and maybe even stand up for your rights. Then, when the largest percentage of the squeaky wheels have turned in some other direction, the vast machine swings right back into the high gears, leaving all you little cogs satisfactorily bewildered.

And you people want me to vote… Hah!

I may still believe in fairy tales, Santa Clause, true love, string theory, the Easter bunny, Pokemon, and knights errant but - as for democracy? Well, I’m a romantic, gentleman, but I’m not a total fucking retard.

    I think I’ve begun judging my days in terms of Roy. Today, I agree with Roy.
