McCain Adviser Says Terrorist Attack Would Be “Big Advantage” for McCain

by Chris Edelson  ::  Filed Under America's Enemies, Elections 2008  ::  June 23rd, 2008 @ 5:49 pm EST

Imagine if anyone remotely connected to Barack Obama said that a terrorist attack would be a “big advantage” for Obama.  It could be one of his advisors, someone who once visited his church, somebody he shook hands with in a receiving line.  Everyone from Michelle Malkin to Chris Matthews would be apopletic and Obama would be forced to denounce, repudiate, and distance himself from everyone and everything within a 100 mile radius.

Well, top McCain adviser Charlie Black just said that a terrorist attack on U.S. soil would be a “big advantage” for his man.  Will McCain have to dispatch Black post haste?  I doubt it.  David Broder will probably write up a column explaining that McCain has tons and tons of Beltway insider street cred and Chuck Todd will be all over the airwaves telling us that it’s ok when someone in the McCain camp says something like this.

Maybe I’ll be wrong.  I hope so.

10 RESPONSES to “McCain Adviser Says Terrorist Attack Would Be “Big Advantage” for McCain”

so far so bad…Gloria Borger on CNN dismissed this as a “one day story”

you know what’s not a “one day story”? the nonsense about a preacher who came to Obama’s church and said something about Hillary Clinton…that happened weeks ago but Wolf Blitzer is still flogging it tonight. I guess Charlie Black is a-ok as long as he doesn’t start preaching about race issues in Chicago….a hell of a lot scarier than any terrorist attack

This is somewhat reminiscent of what Rumsfeld said awhile back (heard in the last audio clip). It makes me ill to know people actually think in this way.

I think you are taking Black’s quote out of context, the “it” does not refer to a terrorist attack, but McCain’s “knowledge and ability to talk about it [the unfortunate event].” That said, perhaps Black needs a lesson in antecedents so that this unfortunate mix up won’t happen again.

    but wait, here’s where the story comes from (excerpt from Fortune magazine)

    “The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an %u201Cunfortunate event,%u201D says Black. %u201CBut his knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who%u2019s ready to be Commander-in-Chief. And it helped us.%u201D As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. %u201CCertainly it would be a big advantage to him,%u201D says Black.”

      sorry, my cut and paste job came out oddly…the Fortune piece says that Black referred to “another terrorist attack on US soil” as “a big advantage” for McCain

      Yeah, I linked over to the Fortune article and I think the writer (and you, by extension) are trying to create something that isn’t there. No one hopes for another terrorist attack, but if one were to happen, Black is saying that he like a leader such as McCain to be in office to deal with it. That’s a no-day story.

      here’s the exact excerpt:

      The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in December was an “unfortunate event”, says Black. “But his [McCain's] knowledge and ability to talk about it reemphasized that this is the guy who’s ready to be Commander in Chief. And it helped us.” As would, Black concedes with startling candor after we raise the issue, another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. “Certainly it would be a big advantage to him,” says Black

      I see your point about the confusing antecedent, but it’s clear that Black is talking about how these events affect the campaign, and he says the Bhutto assassination helped McCain the candidate, as would an attack on US soil. He may believe that the reason these events help McCain is because it highlights positive traits of McCain’s, but he was certainly saying that an attack would be something that helps McCain’s candidacy

      Apparently, he has come out and apologized for his comments (which were nonetheless filled with truthiness). That’s a bad move on his part, he should have taken a cue from a master of spin like me and blamed poor antecedents. Or he could have just blamed the national media like someone else I know who does that repeatedly…

If there is any real doubt about the way that McCain’s campaign is thinking, or really the government is thinking these days they should take a look at this footage:

I live in Denver and for two days last week, these small black, unmarked helicopters weaved in and out of the skyscrapers downtown and then would periodically stop on the top of buildings and guys would quickly jump off and on… I’m not entirely sure what to make of this but, honestly its enough to make me nervous, and if you don’t get what I mean, google “False Flag Operations” I’m sure that Black knows all about them.
