Another Poll Shows Obama With Double-Digit Lead

by Chris Edelson  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008  ::  June 25th, 2008 @ 10:47 am EST

An LA Times-Bloomberg poll shows Obama leading McCain 49-37 (when Bob Barr and Ralph Nader are included, Obama’s lead widens to 48-33).

 When a Newsweek poll last week showed Obama ahead by 15 points, media elites dismissed it as an outlier.  What will they say now?

I certainly don’t think it’s time to get cocky, but I do think the media should be asking why McCain is having trouble, and why his supporters are less enthusiastic than Obama’s, as the poll also showed.  In addition, this should affect the way the media talks about Obama and race–the poll showed Obama tied with McCain among white voters.

The poll’s director said this appears “to be a Democratic year”.  There is a long way to go, of course, but this is good news for Obama.  Let’s see if the talking heads on CNN and MSNBC give this poll the attention it deserves.

Only a moron would not realize the impact of including Barr in the poll. Hmm genius, I wonder what would happen if we included hillary. IDIOT!!!

    the poll asked separate questions–respondents were polled on a race that included Barr, and one that did not

    Barr is actually a candidate and will be on the ballot so this is all quite different from including Hillary in a poll question–she’s out of the race and won’t be on the general election ballot

Does this mean that the media is going to be biased toward McCain? After all, a blowout election doesn’t sell as many papers.

    good point Jim–it does seem clear that the media is rooting for a close election, and they keep describing it as 50-50, even though polls and electronic trading (see the Iowa electronic markets and intrade sites) suggest Obama is the favorite. I do think it’ll be hard to get Chris Matthews, Wolf Blitzer and the rest to budge from their conviction that this is up for grabs, even if polling continues to suggest otherwise, and your theory may well be correct
