The Kucinich Impeachment Resolution Marches On

by Jim Moss  ::  Filed Under U.S. Domestic Issues  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 1:27 am EST

Tuesday’s session in the House featured this short, but impassioned speech by Dennis Kucinich.

Kucinich was referring to his ongoing attempt to bring articles of impeachment against President Bush.  So far, the attempt has been downplayed in the media and portrayed as a distraction to Democrats and a juvenile political stunt in the minds of Republicans.  On Tuesday, however, a refined version of the bill was referred to the House Judiciary Committee by a 238-180 vote.

The questions are starting to emerge:

1) Does Kucinich have a legitimate case against Bush?  Of course he does.

2) Will this bill go anywhere in committee?  Probably not, but who thought it would get this far?

3) Would an impeachment drama be a help or a hindrance to the Obama campaign?  It seems it could only hurt McCain, who has pretty much tied himself to Bush’s star.

4) Could the country withstand another round of impeachment hearings at this time?  That’s the question I don’t want to think about.

What, the country is going to collapse if Bush is impeached? Please. We’re surviving his presidency, I’m pretty sure we’d manage to get through his trial and hanging for treason.

    If only…!

Your (4): Surely you’re joking!

House impeachment hearings caused Nixon to resign before he could even be tried.

W. would probably stick it out into a trial, but then we’d find out
he’s been hiding with retroactive immunity for telecoms,
not to mention all those administration flunkies who’ve refused
to answer questions by Congress or just refused to show up.

The real juvenile stunt was Republicans trying to impeach Clinton
over a blowjob.

W. is a felon on multiple counts, and the evidence against him
is piled up as high as the bodies in Iraq.

Could the country stand impeachment hearings? Bush has a 28% approval rating; the country wants to be rid of him as soon as possible; and a majority think he should be impeached. The country wants and needs impeachment hearings.

So here’s my constitutional question: If articles of impeachment have been introduced in the House (and they have), does that block Bush’s power to pardon crimes associated with those articles of impeachment unless and until an impeachment vote by the full House fails?

re. #2:
even if it doesn’t end in impeachment; the more stains we can leave on this vile presidency, the better.

I would actually like to know who is it that always orchestrates those “could the country stand an impeachment” type comments whenever these type of stories appear.

It has to be orchestrated so for example in this story who actually told the writer or made the writer think it was necessary to insert such a comment? I for one have never ever when talking about impeachment with real people heard someone say it would be traumatic for the country. So it isn’t rooted in reality therefore those comments (which always appear in any story about impeachment) must be planted.

So lets trace it.
Lets start witht this article.
To the writer : what made you insert that comment? did you think of it and why? what have you seen or heard that ever made you think impeachment was something the country might be uncertain it “could stand”

Did you just say it because other articles typically do?
Did someone here on this blog reedit your article? if so who?

I want to start tracing these subtle message comments about how tough impeachment would be to the source.
They are part of a persistent campaign to dissuade the public from impeachment. It’s time we figured out how the writer’s are being told to place them in their stories.

the truth is impeachment could happen in one day - Watergate took longer because the truth had to be discovered - with bush the evidence is already uncovered - it merely needs to be presented to the congress and a vote taken - it could happen in one day. It need be no longer. the founders made it uniquely simple in America to remove a leader - it just takes one vote of congress. It isn’t shocking or amazing - is is simple and the country goes right on as the perpetrator is punished.

    Let’s back up the conspiracy bus a little bit, shall we? I’m the author, and I inserted the question as a conversation starter, and nothing else. It seems to have worked.

    BTW - I do think Bush should be impeached. And I think Kucinich’s efforts have received far less publicity than they should. I feel pretty good about the fact that this article has caused more people to think about it.

    Mike says  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 2:35 pm EST

    Seriously? You’ve never heard a real person say it, so the question isn’t rooted in reality? So they are planted? Seriously… that’s your logic?

      Have you ever in your life ever lambasted someone?

      The whole impeachment trauma meme is bull to begin with. Are there that many people more concerned with the lack of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood comraderie than the future of the country? It’s the lamest conversation starter I’ve ever seen. At least put a sarcasm sticker on it.

if we lack the fortitude to enforce our own laws, do we deserve to be a country anymore?

Until found guilty, we are all presumed innocent (unless you reside at Guantanamo Bay Prison), therefore, Bush can not pardon anybody for anything until somebody is actually found guilty of something. If Bush were to be impeached, tried in the Senate and found guilty, he would be immediately removed from office and, therefore, not have the authority to pardon himself. Butt (sic or sick) Dick could cover his behind.

david says  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 3:50 pm EST

I hat to think what Cheney would do if Bush was impeached. Somebody better go after him also.

courtney says  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 4:12 pm EST

While I understand why one must consider how impeachment hearings would help or hurt the country, I do think it’s mandatory that Bush be impeached whether it’s painful or not. His continued illegal occupation of our White House is unforgivable.

The question isn’t whether the country can survive impeachment proceedings. The question is whether the country can survive WITHOUT impeachment proceedings. This administration has turned us into something slimy and small. Impeach this administration! Turn us back into a country that is proud to stand by it’s principles.

Mr Moss, if you think impeachment must happen why did you even bother to ask such a stupid question? Don’t try and justify it by saying you wanted to generate discussion. That is rubbish. You already made it clear that impeachment should and must happen. Stick by your guns instead of prevaricating like that.

The country, no…the world, needs to see Bushco impeached and hung for treason. He has caused the US and the world immeasurable damage. ONLY impeachment can resolve that. What possible harm could it cause? Only good will come of it. Get Bush, Cheyney and all the other criminals in court to stand trial and the US will go up in the world’s standing immediately.

    Jim Moss says  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 10:07 pm EST

    Foster - It’s not so black and white. There is potential harm in impeaching Bush just before he leaves office. It could further fracture an already divided Congress and nation, making progress on issues such as health care and the economy more difficult for the new president.

    The question is: Do the benefits of impeachment - which are many - outweigh these harms? That is most certainly a topic that is worthy of discussion.

Punk Rock Stud says  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 8:27 pm EST

I woke up in the morning a few days ago, and not only saw the story of impeachment, but I saw on MSNBC that there were war crimes tribunal charges that were going to levied against Bush and several members of his cronies. Did any one see that show or hear about it?

Punk Rock Stud says  ::  July 17th, 2008 @ 8:33 pm EST

There should be an impeachment. I am ashamed it has taken so long.

Chaos Motor says  ::  July 18th, 2008 @ 12:33 am EST

If we have any hope to maintain any semblance of the rule of law, separation of powers, and participatory representation, we MUST impeach Bush. The long-term, devastating effects of not doing so far outweigh any minor, temporary “damages” (that is, upsetting the powerful establishment) of pursuing impeachment

rajiv seth says  ::  July 18th, 2008 @ 1:24 am EST

to impeach bush means nothing - what we have to do is impeach the system - all governments are corrupt and dishonest - to say even india’s is a cruel joke - of course - its the whole corporatocracy that needs to be thrown out along with the kenneth lays and his ilk - no corporate entity should be imune - remember they are not in the business of our health wealth or happpiness - they are in the business of their profits and perks - when a non performing ceo [b of a] can get a parachute in excess of $100 million - something is wrong - how do you spend that kind of money in a lifetime leave alone deserve it - wall street bonus robbers take note - governments protect these kinds of people not their constituents - when a nation with the kind of poverty of india’s can produce billionaires like ambani you have to wonder - when will this corporate -government sponsored - theft be checked - ‘tighten your belt’ ‘give us your children’ ‘buy bottled water’ - at which point are we going to say enough - the whole lot need to be sent to chad or the sudan without all their perks and trust funds and then lets see what big swinging dicks they are -

“you leftys are funny”

And you sir are an idiot if you truly think that this is a “partisan” issue.

Mr. Bush and his administration set out on the path of deliberate manipulation and betrayal of this country. Treason is an offense that is punishable by “hanging by the neck until dead”, although in this case, I don’t think we should execute them for their crimes against this nation. Rather, I believe they should be sent to the “Green Zone” to live, without the benefit of the military protecting them. They wanted in Iraq so bad, let them have it… but, Americans need not sacrifice any more of our loved ones for the benefits of this administration and their cronies.

The loudest calls for action, at least in my area (I’m in a “Red to the bone” state), DO NOT come from “lefty” persons, but rather from a whole bunch of “righty” people who are super-pissed at having been made to look foolish for their blind trust in these slimy traitors.

The need for impeachment is not about politics… It is about setting precedent.
Here’s the question for all you “righty” types…
If Mr. Bush were a Democrat, would you be so peachy keen with their behavior?
… that’s what I thought :P Those citizens who are insistent on still supporting this criminal administration are just as guilty of treason as Mr. Bush, et. all…

I take it your are the (mental) midget with a hot wife? What’s her phone number?

You, sir, are a moronic redneck.

Impeaching Bush is just one of the best things the USA could do to restore the world’s faith in your government. Nothing less will work. And while your government procrastinates Russia sees a power vacuum and is using it. The bank Johnny’s have taken advantage and their greed is seriously threatening your financial institutions, which will in turn implode your economy and leave you a third world country at best.
