Obama Hits McCain Back on “Celebrity” Attack

by Chris Edelson  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008, Media Issues  ::  August 11th, 2008 @ 2:02 pm EST

It has been frustrating, to say the least, to watch the out-of-ideas McCain campaign run moronic ads comparing Obama with celebrities.  It was hard not to think of 2000 or 2004, when baseless Republican attacks caught on with the media.  I wondered whether Obama would, or could, fight back.

It’s good to remember something: Obama is neither Kerry of 2004 nor Gore of 2000.  He knows how to fight back–check out this hard-hitting ad that adroitly reminds voters of McCain’s close ties to Bush while pointing out that McCain is the real “Washington celebrity”–an insider in bed with lobbyists who loves to have his ego stroked by TV talk show hosts.

Looking forward to seeing more of this–and I hope CNN and MSNBC will show the Obama ad even half as much as they have shown the Paris Hilton-Britney Spears ad.

11 RESPONSES to “Obama Hits McCain Back on “Celebrity” Attack”

Chris - I like that the final split-second image in this ad was Obama sitting down and talking to the common man. Republicans have mastered the subliminal technique, as you have described. It’s about time the Democrats started using it.

agreed–and most of all, I love that Obama is hitting back

Perhaps I’m slow, but I would like a little more positive contrast at the end–maybe it’s as little as lingering a little more on McSame hugging stars and then holding for another second on BHO and working folks. I love the shot of the AZ Asshole marching point for a phalanx of DC lobbyists. If those other faces had any meaning to most Americans, I could thrill to 30 seconds of just that.

sounds reasonable to me…but I’m thrilled simply to see an ad like this at all. It’s been nauseating to sit thru the McCain crap ads with nothing on Obama’s side

Right. Let’s have ALL the candidates slide right on down to the lowest possible common denominator.

I don’t think Obama’s ad was anywhere near as bad as McCain’s. I do think, unfortunately, that Obama has to respond to the garbage that McCai n has thrown out there. I don’t think you’ll ever see him do something as mindless or insulting as the Britney Spears-Paris Hilton ad. reality is that media elites eat this stuff up and McCain has dominated coverage with his stupid ads. Obama has to respond

Obama’s new ad is his best negative one yet. The “hands” ad is still my favorite overall though.

what’s the hands ad?
