The Momentum Has Started |
|
|
Yesterday, we launched our campaign to call Congress and ask them which side they are on:
Quite simply, with rising health care costs (including $50 billion per year to pay for insurance industry advertising) being born out by working families and American businesses, health care is a top economic concern. To keep American workers at their best, and to keep American business competitive in the world, something has to change.
Nancy Pelosi has recently declared health care expansion to be #2 on her list of legislative priorities, right after ending the Iraq war. In the past month, tens of thousands of Americans have told us they want quality, affordable health care for all. Now it’s time to ask Congress.
So, Congress, which side are you on? Are you with us for quality, affordable health care for all? Or are you with the insurance companies, working to preserve our broken system?
Digby lays out the importance of this campaign:
Health Care For America Now is going to be an important group over the next year as Democrats roll out some kind of national health care plan. (We hope…) regardless of whether you support the HCAN plan or something more akin to Edwards’ and Clinton’s plans or maybe even single payer, having some institutional push to at least keep it high on the agenda is vitally necessary.
And Mike Lux over at Open Left pulls in the technology aspect:
Back when I was working on health care in the White House in 1993-94, we got people to put grassroots pressure on Congress through the old-fashioned kind of ways- you know, stamps, postcards, hand-written letters. We tried to get people to call, but that took more work, time, and money too. These days, everything is so much faster with the tubes, and we have the opportunity to generate a lot more pressure for serious health care reform on the Hill.
Finally, Igor at Think Progress drives the point home:
…it’s up to the majority of Americans who support health care reform to demand it. Indeed, “82% of Americans think our health care system needs a “major overhaul†and “over 90% of Americans think the next President and Congress should improve the quality, affordability and of health careâ€
The campaign launched yesterday, and as of today, we’re beginning to see results! Hundreds of calls have been made already, and we’ve got unconfirmed reports back that dozens of members of Congress are on our side!
If you’ve taken a moment to call your Members of Congress, thank you! The calls only take a minute, but they are already making a big difference. And if you haven’t found time yet, please click here and call your elected officials. As Igor said, while the majority of America supports major health care reform, we still need to demand it from our elected officials.
Give them a call. Tell them health care is a priority for you as a constituent. Ask them to get on your side and support quality, affordable health care for all.

Great news!
Good work. Note that your call request was featured yesterday at The Sideshow, and Avedon also posted my cabdrollery feature for this at Eschaton (got 4848 hits).
Thanks for this! All help in spreading the word is most appreciated!
