Sarah Palin: The Gift that Keeps Giving

by Chris Edelson  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008  ::  September 2nd, 2008 @ 9:02 pm EST

No sooner do you get done talking about one Palin scandal than another one, or two, or three, pop up.  The latest: Palin and her husband co-owned a car wash that was shut down by the state of Alaska when they failed to comply with state regulations, as Daily Kos reports.  This just happened last year, a few months after Palin took office as governor (the default notice came on stationery from the governor’s office bearing Palin’s name).  Hey, that’s a great sign–if Palin shows such disregard for following state law as governor, perhaps we can look forward to her showing a similar disregard for federal law as vice president.  Rudy Giuliani and others keep raving about Palin’s dynamite executive experience, which supposedly surpasses every other candidate on both tickets, but it turns out that she couldn’t figure out how to run a car wash.

That’;s not it for today.  We also learned that Gov. Palin bravely wielded her veto pen to cut funding for a state program that gave shelter to troubled youths, including homeless teen mothers.  Is that the record of reform McCain was so taken with?  I guess compassionate conservatism went out with George W. Bush.

Oh wait, one more thing–her pastor suggested in 2004 that critics of President Bush could be banished to hell, along with anyone voting for Kerry.  Nice touch.

It’s a good thing McCain vetted Palin so thoroughly, otherwise we might be finding out some pretty crazy things about her.

the regularity of these bombshells is absurdly pleasing. I had a dream last night about a parade of drunken clowns and I think its correct interpretation involves the Palin nomination. When she was elected, I thought “okay, the GOP and its vaunted machinery must’ve done their homework. this woman’s middle-class appeal might be a thorn in our paw.” I prefer to err on the side of caution, but this woman has made me think my whole approach to the GOP.

The biggest revelation has yet to come out in the MSM. Sarah Palin committed, by her own admission (no rumors here!), a terrible act of child endangerment. Sarah Palin went to Texas for a convention. Her water broke while she was there, a month premature. She did not seek any medical attention for at least 10 hours, possibly many more.

Her son Trig, prediagnosed with Down Syndrome and being born a month early to a 44-year-old mother, needed immediate medical care, from the moment her water broke, because as the fluid level drops, the baby can get hung up on the umbilical cord. You need a fetal heart monitor to tell if the baby is still doing okay in there. You also need to protect both mother and child from the infections that used to routinely kill women and newborns during childbirth in the bad old days.

Sarah Palin ignored Trig’s need for immediate medical care in order to first give a speech, and then continue her travel agenda unaffected by the whole “birth” thing. Sarah Palin tells this story with great pride, believing it shows her toughness and dedication. I believe refusing to get medical care for Trig may actually be a crime. The medical science is indisputable. The child needed care and didn’t get it. By the grace of God, he survived the danger his mother put him in, but that does not excuse her actions. This is not a “private” matter– child endangerment is everyone’s business.

PLEASE help spread these facts. The male-dominated news media doesn’t seem to “get” how truly criminally negligent the governor’s actions were. Perhaps birth is somewhat of a mystery to them, and all this talk of amniotic fluid and infections sounds too icky to get into.

Any mother can tell you how incredibly negligent it would be to act the way Sarah Palin did. An already high-risk pregnancy? And the water breaks a month early? And you give a speech, then go into a huge crowd of people carrying who knows what germs, get on an airplane and HOPE the baby doesn’t strangle or get an infection or be born with lung problems before you can get back to Wasilla, Alaska, from Texas??? Excuse me???? How can that not be a crime?

Perhaps if she had some religious or medical justification for needing to give birth in Alaska, there might be some way to understand this behavior, but the governor herself JOKED about her child endangerment, saying she had to lie to the flight attendants and take that flight to Alaska because, as the First Dude said, “You can’t have a fish-picker from Texas.” I don’t find that very funny.

    thanks for commenting Rachel–I don’t know about this story, but appreciate your writing about this. this is tricky territory and I am reluctant to tread here, but I do notice that Palin seems to be making her families and kids a prominent part of her candidacy yet wants to shut off all questions…dicey territory though, I feel

Palin also “forgot” to include her part ownership of the car wash on her financial disclosure statement she had to file when running for governor. Part ownership in ANY non-public company was specifically required to be listed in that disclosure document.

    correct–I saw that, but didn’t mention–thanks!
