Reducing Dependence on Foreign Oil Through Domestic Wind and Solar

by Josh Nelson  ::  Filed Under Energy Policy  ::  October 7th, 2008 @ 1:00 am EST

Sounds like a pretty good idea, right? Definitely the kind of plan I could get behind.

When I saw that T. Boone Pickens was using that phrase to advertise for his energy plan, I got excited. “Wow”, I thought, “Pickens has finally added a solar component to his energy plan.” No such luck. The Pickens Plan still doesn’t have a solar component. It looks like Pickens is using the idea of solar energy in much the same way he is using Carl Pope of the Sierra Club.

I wish the Pickens Plan did support solar energy, but as of this writing, it doesn’t.

One RESPONSE to “Reducing Dependence on Foreign Oil Through Domestic Wind and Solar”

Hey Josh,

I am trying to understand…is your problem with the purported “false advertising aspects” or with a plan that does not use solar.

I think that the arithmatic of the Plan: using Wind to generate electrical power in order to liberate NG for use as a transportation fuel (heavy trucks), works just fine. And from what I can gather T. Boone is not against the use of solar or any other type of energy that gets us off of foreign oil.

Wind is a technology that is here NOW. T. Boone is not making this stuff up…the Europeans are way ahead of us in wind power generation. Solar is great…but it just not there yet from a cost and technological standpoint. Give it (solar) time….it will get there.

As to “using” Carl Pope…first Josh, I think Carl is a great man and just a little too smart for that. As well he has a tremendous feduciary responsibility to the Sierra Club membership to sell them down the river…secondly, if it helps get us off of foreign oil…he can use my grandmother for all I care.
