First Media Question for McCain On Liddy Comes From…David Letterman

by Chris Edelson  ::  Filed Under Elections 2008  ::  October 16th, 2008 @ 10:04 pm EST

For months, I have been wondering when the media would notice that John McCain has a personal relationship with convicted Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy.  I assumed Keith Olbermann offered the best shot at bringing this story to the surface, but it turned out David Letterman asked the tough questions, directly to McCain.  Tonight, Letterman asked about McCain’s relationship with Liddy.  When McCain conceded the relationship, Letterman pointed out that the same case McCain is making about Obama and Ayers could be made about McCain and Liddy.

McCain tried to argue that Letterman was picking on a few of the “millions of words” said in the course of a campaign, but everyone knows that is disingenuous.  McCain’s campaign is making robocalls claiming Obama has “worked closely” with “domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.”

Maybe it will take a McCain appearance on the Daily Show to see more questions about McCain’s hypocrisy.

Saw this on Letterman a bit ago and thought about your previous coverage Chris. Glad you are on top of it.

I was so happy that FINALLY someone called McCain on this, and at first McCain acted like he hardly knew Liddy until after the break when he realized he’d better come clean and said he knew him and was friends with his son as well.

    agreed Terri! I saw that McCain tried to backtrack after the break. Letterman did a really excellent job–maybe Andrea Mitchell and Wolf Blitzer can follow his lead!!

I hate people that can dish it but cant take it! short fuse McCain seems to be one of them.

    well said. I think we saw the real McCain in the debates, especially the last one, where he seemed to be ready to explode. Fuming, cranky, angry–that’s how he came off. I don’t think it plays well, to say the least. And it matches what we’ve heard about McCain from his Senate colleagues, even Republicans, who say he has a terrible temper. short fuse indeed

Letterman at his very best!!! Especially in the 2nd half of the McCain interview! Good to see that both -at least somewhat- kept their sense of humor in all of this though

    indeed! maybe Letterman can give some lessons to Wolf Blitzer, Andrea Mitchell, Chris Matthews
