Why We Vote: North Carolina

Whether you live in the swingin’est swing state or a solid party stronghold, there are many important reasons to vote on Tuesday beyond the crucial contest at the top of the ticket. Through the election, The Seminal will tell you about some of them.

Anyone paying attention to the Democratic push to retake the US Senate has by now probably heard about the offensive ad being run against Kay Hagan by Republican incumbent Liddy Dole (here’s Hagan’s response). Dole, wife of the former Republican leader, was heavily recruited by the White House in 2002, and President Bush campaigned more for Mrs. Dole than he has for any other candidate, anywhere, with the exception of his brother, Jeb. To return the favor, Dole has voted with the president 92% of the time.

But live by the Bush, die by the Bush; so in 2008, Bush-buddy Dole faces a stiff challenge from Kay Hagan. Hagan, unlike her opponent, supports replacing Bush’s millionaire tax breaks with tax cuts for the middle class, supports replacing rhetoric about supporting the troops with real programs to provide veterans with good jobs and quality healthcare, and “supports a responsible withdrawal [from Iraq] so that we can re-focus our national security efforts on defeating al Qaeda, [and] improving our country’s reputation around the world. . .”

If you live in North Carolina, you know how much you’ve struggled under Bush policies supported by Sen. Dole. Kay Hagan wants to represent North Carolinians instead of the Republicans’ corporate friends. So, get to the polls and vote for Kay Hagan on November 4th. If you know folks in North Carolina, give them a call and get out the vote!
