Why We Vote: Alaska |
|
|
Whether you live in the swingin’est swing state or a solid party stronghold, there are many important reasons to vote on Tuesday beyond the crucial contest at the top of the ticket. Through the election, The Seminal will tell you about some of them.
Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich is running against convicted felon Ted “Toobz” Stevens for the Senate seat Stevens has held since the days when LBJ was cleaning out his Oval Office desk. Stevens has brought a goodly hunk of old-fashioned pork to Alaska, but has stood in the way of the nation’s progress for far too long.
Begich is solidly forward-looking, with plans to aggressively promote energy alternatives and combat global warming. He is a strong advocate for affordable healthcare and an end to US military involvement in Iraq. And Begich is an unapologetic critic of No Child Left Behind—he doesn’t mince words, he wants it eliminated (which, to my mind, is the only way to go).
Begich is polling ahead of Felonious T.E.D. right now, but Stevens has a powerful psychological hold on a state that has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since Mike Gravel won reelection in 1974. So, if you live in Alaska, vote for Mark Begich on November 4th. If you know folks in the Last Frontier, give them a call and get out the vote!
