34 GOP Senators Oppose the Recovery Plan: In Their Own Words

by Josh Nelson  ::  Filed Under Political Tactics  ::  February 1st, 2009 @ 11:20 am EST

This post had an incredible response on Daily Kos (nearly 500 comments) and Huffington Post (over 100 comments and counting). Much more on this from Chris Bowers, Kagro X, Nate Silver, Digby and Jason Rosenbaum.

Just as House Republicans did, GOP Senators are now pretending they’ll vote for the economic recovery package if only those unreasonable Democrats would toss them a bone or two. For the most part, they are lying. They will kick and scream for every concession possible, creating a new faux outrage every few hours. Foolishly, Democrats will likely cave to some of these demands. Then, Republicans will vote against the bill overwhelmingly. It is difficult to imagine anything more sinister than this. They are essentially weakening the bill as much as possible, making it less likely to work. Then they’ll bail at the last second, in case it does fail, so they can point their fingers and assign all of the blame to Democrats.

At least 34 Republican Senators are on the record in opposition to the plan. They have their talking points, and message discipline is almost absolute. If you watch the talking heads shows today you’ll see that the full press to discredit this package is well underway. Two lone voices of sanity in the GOP stand out in support of the economic recovery package: Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe. Martinez, as far as I can tell, is actually undecided. I need your help verifying this information and finding/soliciting statements from the other Senators. If you can find a statement that indicates support or opposition from Barrasso, Johanns, Lugar or Specter - or a better statement from any Republican Senator - post it in the comments.

Senator Statement Likely Vote Contact

Barrasso, John - (R - WY) (202) 224-6441

Brownback, Sam - (R - KS) Will only lead to inefficient and wasteful spending. Against Recovery (202) 224-6521

Chambliss, Saxby - (R - GA) Unless they raise the tax credits from about 35 percent of the package to somewhere around [the] 45 percent or 50 percent range, I doubt you’ll see many Republican senators voting for it. Against Recovery (202) 224-3521
Coburn, Tom - (R - OK) This is about spending money we don’t have for things we don’t need. Against Recovery (202) 224-5754

Hutchison, Kay Bailey - (R - TX) In its current form, I will not vote for it, and I don’t know if every single Republican is committed yet, but if so, it would be only one or two. Against Recovery (202) 224-5922
Inhofe, James M. - (R - OK) Asked if he would participate in a filibuster: “I would be a part of it. Against Recovery (202) 224-4721

Johanns, Mike - (R - NE) (202) 224-4224
Kyl, Jon - (R - AZ) “Whatever we can do, whether offering amendments, whether voting against the bill because it could not be amended, or whatever parliamentary possibilities are in front of us we will explore because this isn’t about playing the game.” Against Recovery (202) 224-4521
Lugar, Richard G. - (R - IN) (202) 224-4814
Martinez, Mel - (R - FL) Apparently undecided. (202) 224-3041
McCain, John - (R - AZ) A lot of the things included in this bill in the house are policies that the democrats have tried unsuccessfully for years to implement that have nothing to do with stimulating the economy, and then there are other provisions that simply are a waste of money. Wicker, Roger F. - (R - MS) A trillion dollars is a terrible thing to waste Against Recovery (202) 224-6253

President Obama and Democrats in Congress have a responsibility to push through the strongest bill possible. Caving to unreasonable Republican demands at the last minute - in a hapless attempt to pick up votes that can’t be picked up - is counterproductive and irresponsible. I really hope they have enough political courage to cut those who don’t negotiate in good faith out of the discussions, and advance the strongest bill possible. We’re told elections have consequences. It is time for Democrats to prove that they understand this.

This only confirms my thoughts that the Republican party has fallen into a very deep and dark abiss, where it will crash and burn. Clearly they are not paying attention to what has been going on in this country, and clearly they don’t give a bean about us!
It is amusing to see that, clearly, they did not even bother to read the plan, have not bothered to open their eyes to our economic reality of today, and are delluded into thinking that somehow these past 8 years of Republican economic principles of cutting taxes for the wealthy and the corporations had even the hint of anything but a negative impact on our economy. Over 50,000 jobs lost in one day this past week!!! 8 years of tax cuts did nothing to avert this disaster, do they think we are morons?
Hence, they have made it abundantly clear that they have chosen childish misguided party loyalty over the wellbeing of America and the survival of Americans; or they are simply one really stupid bunch of people not to see that they have absolutely no credibility when it comes to our economy or fixing our economic problems….we are in the place we are in because we were submitted to 8 years of their Republican FAILED economic strategy.
They also don’t realize that the American electorate is fully awake and engaged now, and we are not as stupid as they think we are, and we will not forget their childish pranks. It is time to have intelligent adults at the table, and clearly they are not up for the job.

These Republican mouth pieces never batted an eye when Bush wanted more money for his “wars”, rubber stamped Bush’s stimulus packages and budgets…well over a trillion, and still counting..most of it going to no-bid contracts for their private oil, construction and security crony companies….while “cutting taxes” for those same wealthy corporate owners and cronies…but let President Obama try and give a little relief to the average citizen, losing their homes, their jobs and have no health care insurance for themselves or their children…and the Republicans start screaming about “fiscal responsibilities” (like a bunch of bitches with skinned knees!)

When you extend an olive branch to a repubie, it is highly likely that s/he will rip it out of your grasp and beat you to death with it. Therefore, let the bastards sit by the curb and pout. No olive branches. We can do just fine without them.

A curious definition of bi-partisanship: I’ll hug your elephant, when you kiss my ass.

The real test here is for the Dems and Obama: You now have the advantage–use it! The working stiffs who voted you guys into office are watching closely. We already are suspicious of the real gameplan here, given some picks for this administration (Daschle, Geithner and their “confusion” over paying their share of income tax???–to say nothing of Daschle’s and his wife’s lobbying connections, Ruben and his distaste for unions, etc.) WTF???

This better not simply be a theatrical piece to amuse the groundlings into thinking that the big bad Repugs spoiled everything. We are smarter than that, we’re mad, AND WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANY LONGER.

Why are we continuing to give tax cuts to the billionaires when we have no jobs…This makes me sick..When will they realize if we dont have jobs, they dont have any money..If we are not happy ,aint no one happy…I will admit, we are seeing more transparency so they cant slip in those earmarks..Thats a good thing

And the trillion plus the Republicans et al have spent on an unnecessary war is not wasteful? The saboteur is alive and well represented in Washington DC and AM talk radio.

THERE IS A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN……….. but the republicans are still reading from a 1974 SCRIPT:

Taggart: [learning Bart is the new sheriff of Rock Ridge] Now if that don’t beat all. Here we take the good time and trouble to slaughter every last Indian in the West, and for what? So we can appoint a sheriff that’s blacker than any Indian. I am depressed.
Lyle: Excuse me, Mr. Taggart, sir, but I sure do hate to see you like this. What if me and the boys was to shoot that nigger dead? Would that pep you up some?
Taggart: It might.
